Family drama erupts as woman discovers biological father and half-sister are dating – NEWS.com.au

When Katie* was 17, her mum Sandra* suddenly announced one day that they were going out for ice cream later that afternoon.

At the time, the invitation seemed casual; she certainly didnt suspect that her life was about to change forever.

But once they arrived at the shop, the penny dropped when Katie spotted a man who looked exactly like her sitting at one of the tables. It was her biological father her mum had had an affair with him and it had resulted in Katie.

My mum said that she felt I was old enough to know the truth and then explained about her affair, Katie shared on Reddit.

Fortunately, my dad decided to forgive my mum and keep me, and I had a pretty good upbringing.

But my mum made me promise I wouldnt tell my older sister and hammering home along with my biological father that hed never be part of my life and didnt want me.

Although it was an incredible amount of information to process, Katie quickly learnt to deal with it and moved on with her life.

Fast forward seven years and Katie was scrolling through Facebook when she spotted a new photo shared by her older sister Bella* and her new boyfriend.

He turned out to be my bio father, Katie recalled.

My big sis has always gravitated towards older men. We like to joke that its the result of too many George Clooney movies growing up.

So I debated what to do for a couple of days, then ultimately decided she needed the truth and told her.

Katies sister didnt take the news well and quickly dumped her boyfriend.

However, she wasnt angry at Katie and understood why shed felt the need to tell her.

But Sandra was a whole other story.

When she found out Katie told her sister about the affair, Sandra hit the roof.

She lost it, attacking Katie for telling Bella something that wasnt her secret to share.

Sandra especially didnt think it was necessary to tell Bella the truth about her boyfriend when their relationship wasnt that serious.

She said I had no business telling anyone and since my bio father isnt related to my sister it didnt matter and it wasnt like they were talking marriage anyway, Katie said.

Its been two months and shes still angry, still snide, calls me a traitor and finds excuses to make loud comments about how I cant be trusted with anything private or important, so beware.

At the time I thought I was doing the right thing, but Ive never seen my mum this angry before, and shes sustained that anger for two solid months, so Im starting to worry. Did I actually do something really sh**ty? Am I the a**hole?

Thankfully, more than 2000 commenters jumped on Reddit to reassure Katie that she didnt do anything wrong by telling Bella that she was dating her biological father.

She needs to know thats weird and a little too close to home, one horrified commenter said.

Also, its kind of messed up that your older sister was never told about this key part of her family history.

Someone else quickly responded to say that Bella deserved to know the truth, and if Sandra didnt want Katie to tell people about the affair, she shouldnt have cheated in the first place.

I can understand not wanting you to walk around telling every stranger you meet, but when your sister started dating your sperm donor, that is important, a third commenter bluntly stated.

Others expressed disgust that Sandra seemed to be OK with Bella sleeping with Katies biological father as a way to save face.

She was willing to let your sister sleep with the same man she did. Imagine if there had been a pregnancy, youd literally be a sister-aunt, a gobsmacked man pointed out.

Your mum is acting like a jealous ex, which is a whole other level of ick, another horrified commenter jumped in to add.
