Kenosha woman charged in hit-and-run death of pregnant woman – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

A Kenosha woman whose red pickup truck was recorded on security video striking a pregnant woman and then driving over her body was charged Monday with homicide.

Kady B. Mehaffey, 42, faces second-degree reckless homicide, hit-and-run involving death as well as hit-and-run involving injury in the death on Thursday ofMarisol Mendoza-Lopez, 27.

Mendoza-Lopez was walking home from shopping with a man Thursday afternoon when they entered the crosswalk at 24th Avenue and 52nd Street in Kenosha. A red pickup truck failed to stop at a stop sign and plowed into the couple, according to a criminal complaint.

Security video captured the incident, as well as the red pickup truck speeding away from the scene andblowing through a stop sign two blocks away from where Mendoza-Lopez was hit.

According to a GoFundMe page,Mendoza-Lopez was the mother of a 12-year-old daughter and was pregnant. She died at a local hospital shortly after the crash.

Acting on a tip, Kenosha police arrested Mehaffey at her home Friday afternoon and recovered her pickup truck. She claimed that she had loaned her truck to a friend the day before and didn't know where the vehicle was located.

But a security camera shows a woman who appeared to be Mehaffey pulling up to an apartment complex minutes after Mendoza-Lopez was hit and getting out of the pickup.

She is being held on $500,000 bail and ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 22.
