The North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society gave Daniel Clarke-Pearson, MD, former Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the award at its annual meeting on April 11.

The North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society gave Daniel Clarke-Pearson, MD, former Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the organizations Distinguished Service Award at its annual meeting on April 11.

Clarke-Pearson attended Harvard College, where he majored in biology, and later attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Duke University. He joined the Duke faculty in 1981 and later, in 2005, became department chair of the UNC School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He rejoined the departments faculty in 2019. His primary research interest is the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of venous thromboembolic events in particular interest in gynecologic surgery.

Clarke-Pearson has been an active participant in committees of the Gynecologic Oncology Group and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and has led CME courses on complex gynecologic surgery at the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting for over a decade. He served a six-year term, with three years serving as chair, of the ACOG Gyn Practice Committee and on the ACOG Executive Board. He has been a member of the ObGyn Advisory Committee and the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. He served for 18 years as an examiner of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was the 2010-2011 President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.

Clarke-Pearson also was a member of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the SGO Ethics Committee and is past President of the Council of University Chairs of Ob Gyn.
