MARK CONCEPCION JOINS US NOW LIVE HES A FAMILY DOCTOR AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LENDING YOUR EXPERTISE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR AND THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SPEAK. WELL, WEVE RECEIVED A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS FROM PARENTS. WE WANTED TO RUN BY YOU FIRST OF ALL A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER THERES A POSSIBILITY HERE FOR LONG-TERM SIDE EFFECTS ONE PARENT ASKED DIRECTLY WTHA EXACTLY ARE THE RISKS AND POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS OF GIVING THIS VACCINE TO CHILDREN. WHAT OUR LONG-TERM EFFECTS? LLWE NOW WEVE BEEN GIVEN THIS VACCINE TO ADULTS AND THOSE WHO EAR OVER 15 AND AND JUST WITH THIS NEW APPROVAL. YOU KNOW, WERE GOING TO START DOING IT. THERES 28 MILLION CHILDREN IN THE UNITED STATES FROM FIVE TO ELEVEN AND THE BOTTOM LINE IS WE DONT KNOW WHAT ALL THE LONG TERM SIDE EFFECTS CAN BE, BUT WE DO KNOW THAT FOR FOR KSID WHO CAN GET THIS VACCINE IT WILL PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING SEVERAILL LNESSES FROM EXPOS. CODVI SO LONG-TERM LONG-TERM SIDE EFFECTS, YOU KNOW, WERE STILL WAITING FOR THOSE AND THE GOOD NEWS IS ATTH YOU KNOW SO FAR. WE HAVENT SEEN ANYTHING THAT IS OF ANY S SERIOUSNESS OTHER THAN WHAT WE KNOW PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING OF OR HAVEEE BN HURTING HAVE BEEN HEARING ABOUT WAS THE MYOCARDITIS. INFLAMMATION AROUND THE HEART VERY VERY RARE COMPAREDO T THE NUMBER OF POPULATION AND AND MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO KIDS HAVE GOTTEN TTHA HAVE BEEN REALLY WELL AND IN THE STUDY THEY DID NO ONE NO ONE HAD GOTTEN THAT AND THIS STUDY WAS ORVE 2000. I THINK 500 PARTICIPANTS 5 TO 11 YEARS OLD THE BOTTOM LINE LGON TERM. WE DONT KNOW BUT THE BENEFITS LLWI OUTWEIGH ANY OF THE RISKS. WELL THIALS SO. THIS NEXT QUESTION KIND OF HAS TO DO WITH LONG-TERM EFFECTS IF YOU WILLNE O OF OUR VIEWERS ASK THIS QUESTION, HOW WILL THIS AFFECT MY DAUGHTERS FERTILITY IN THE FUTURE? DO WE EVEN CAN WE KNOW THAT? WELL, THATS A THATS AN EXCELLENT QUESTION BECAUSE IF YOU TA ALKBOUT THE YOU KNOW THE AGE AGE FRAME HERE OF WHAT THE YOUNG FEMALE THEYRE GOING THROUGH. THIS IS THE STARTING OF BEPURTY MENSES THE BOTTOM LINE ON THAT TOOTH. WE AGAIN,E W DONT KNOW WHAT LONG-TERM EFFECTS FOR FERTILITY, BUT THE STUDIES THAT WE DO HAVE ATTH TREHE IS AGAIN MUCH MORE BENEFIT BY GETTING THIS ESPECIALLY FOR EVERYONE NOW LONG-TERM. WERE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE AGAIN BENEFITS OUTWEIGH THE RISK HERE. YEAH, IT' HARD TO TKAL ABOUT LONG-TERM ANYTHING WITH A BRAND NEW VIRUS. SO I MEAN, ITS JUSTY B THE VERY NATURE OF THIS PARTICULAR VIRUS, BUT WE SHOULD MAKET I CLEAR THAT WE DO KNOW THAT THERE CAN BE SOME LONG-TERM EFFECTS IF KIDS DO GET THE CORONAVIRUS IF THEY DO GET COVID-1 9.CORRECT.ID-1 AND AND WE DO KNOW THAT AGAIN, YOU KNOW RARE, BUT THERE ARE SOME THINGS MUCH LIKE WITH ADULTS, YOU KNOW, CHILDREN ARE NOT ADULTS THEY ARE THEYRE NOT MINIMIS, BUT THEY ARE CHILDREN. THEY HAVE THEIR OWN THEIR OWN THINGS. THEYRE GOING THROUGH BUT THEY CAN GET SIDE EFFECTSND A SOME OF THEES LONG TERMS WILL AFFECT OF GETTING EXPOSED TO COVID, YOU KNOW CAN CAUSE ISSUES WITH THE HEART WHICH IS ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS MULTI-INFLAMMATORY SYNDROME IS ONE OF THE THINGS WERE SEEING AS WELL. THATS RATHER NEW. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS IF WE CAN GET THE FIVE THROUGH 11 AGES VACCINATED WE WILL BE AEBL TO HELP THEM FROM SEVERE ILLNESSES HELPING THE COMMUNITY OUT. JUST TRYING TO GET PEOPLE BACK IN AND I THINK THATS IMPORTANT. WILL GET THE STUDIES THEY WILL BE IN IN MOST CASES, YOU KNOW FAVORABLE, YOU KNOW, BUT WEVE BEEN DOING THIS ALREADY FOR ALL THE OTHER POPULATIONS DAN AND IF PARENTS ARE CONCERNED THE ONE THING I WOULD SAY IS TALK YOUR YOUR FAMILY PHYSICIAN. TALK TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE. SHOULD WHETHER THATE B THAT OUR PEDIATRIC COLLEAGUES, YOU KNOW, THEYRE OVER 600,000. I BELVEIE FAMILY PRACTICE PHYSICIANS IN THE UNITED STATES. SO ONE IS YOU KNOW, WELL SUPPORT YOU WILL HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY WILL PROVIDE YOU INFORMATION ANDT I WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH A VACCINE WHEN
Get the Facts on the Vax: Viewer questions answered about the COVID-19 vaccine for kids 5-11
West Sacramento doctor answers questions about fertility, side-effects
Updated: 9:06 AM PDT Nov 3, 2021
Federal health officials are recommending Pfizers COVID-19 vaccine for kids ages 5 to 11, clearing the way for about 28 million children to begin receiving the shots. Dr. Marc Concepcion, a family doctor in West Sacramento, joined KCRA 3 to answer viewers questions about the vaccine. We received a lot of questions about whether theres a possibility here for long-term side effects. One parent asked directly what exactly are the risks and possible complications of giving this vaccine to children?Dr. Concepcion: "Weve been given this vaccine to adults and those who are over 15 and with this new approval were going to start doing it . Theres 28 million children in the United States from 5 to 11 and the bottom line is we dont know what all the long-term side effects can be. But we do know that for kids who can get this vaccine it will prevent them from getting severe illnesses from exposure to COVID. So long-term side effects, you know, were still waiting for those and the good news is that so far we havent seen anything that is of any seriousness other than what we know ... the myocarditis, inflammation around the heart very, very rare compared to the number of population and majority of people. Kids have gotten that have been really well and in the study they did, no one had gotten that . And this study was over 2,500 participants 5 to 11 years old. So the bottom line is long-term we dont know, but the benefits will outweigh any of the risks. One of our viewers asked, 'how will this affect my daughters fertility in the future?' Do we even know that? Dr. Concepcion: Well, thats an excellent question because if you talk about the age frame here of what the young females are going through, this is the starting of puberty. The bottom line on that, too, we again we dont know what long-term effects for fertility are, but the studies that we do have show that there is again much more benefit by getting this, especially for everyone. Now long-term, were going to have to wait and see. Again, the benefits outweigh the risk here. Its hard to talk about long-term anything with a brand new virus. But we should make it clear that we do know that there can be some long-term effects if kids do get the coronavirus if they do get COVID-19.Dr. Concepcion: Correct. And we do know that again, you know rare, but there are some things much like with adults. Children are not adults, they are theyre not mini-mes. They have their own things theyre going through. But they can get side effects and some of these long term can cause issues with the heart which is one of the main things. The multi-inflammatory syndrome is one of the things were seeing as well. Thats rather new. The most important thing is if we can get the 5 through 11 ages vaccinated, we will be able to help them from severe illnesses, helping the community out. Just trying to get people back in and I think thats important. We will get the studies. They will be in most cases, you know, favorable. But weve been doing this already for all the other populations. If parents are concerned, the one thing I would say is talk to your family physician. Talk to your primary care physicians or our pediatric colleagues. Theyre over 600,000, I believe, family practice physicians in the United States. Well support you, will hear what you have to say, will provide you information and will provide you with a vaccine when it becomes available.
