Fertile-Beltrami community rallies around family of mother and daughter killed in Grand Forks downtown crash – INFORUM

"I had a calling in my heart to do something for him and his family during this time," she said.

Qualley says others in the community are stepping up as well.

"This is a day in the life of Laura Van Erem," said her husband Pete Van Erem.

Her life is all about her chickens, horses and dogs.

"One day at a time. It's new to find out how to live like this," said a teary-eye Pete Van Erem.

His 52-year-old wife Laura, and her 72-year-old mother Nancy, were killed in a chain reaction crash in downtown Grand Forks Saturday afternoon.

"Just when I thought things couldn't get any better, they fell apart," said Pete, referring to his marriage of 17 years.

He was in Wisconsin visiting family on Saturday, Jan. 9. He had called his wife seconds before the crash. She had answered while stopped at a red light, hanging up when the light turned green.

"I told her I loved her more than anything in this world, I couldn't wait to see her and then the next intersection she died. That's how fast life can change," said Pete.

The couple's 15-year-old daughter Molly was also in the minivan. The three were on their way home after a day of shopping. It was unknown if Molly was going to survive, but on Monday, the family's prayers were answered.

"They actually got her to stand up and she is talking today," explained Pete.

Not only is Pete Van Erem grieving right now, he just had shoulder surgery two weeks ago and can't do any manual labor for the next month.

However, his biggest worry is his daughter's mental health moving on with life without her mom. Once again, he says the community has pledged to help with that too.

"It's a blessing, you don't see that often anymore, it's strong here in this community," said Pete.

Anyone interested in helping the Van Erem family with chores, meals, or donations can get in touch with how to do that here.
