Pearland Animal Shelter facing urgent capacity crisis, drops adoption fees to $0

The Pearland Animal Shelter is facing critical capacity levels and is offering free pet adoptions through mid-February.

Animal Services Manager for the Pearland Animal Shelter John Fisher said the small shelter has room for 34 dog kennels and 20 cat kennels, all of which are full as of Thursday morning.

"We are continuing to tread water and we are not even into spring yet, and that is the scary time," Fisher said. "During the spring, animals wander and they reproduce and we get lots of puppies and kittens."

The shelter is currently offering free pet adoptions for every animal in the shelter through Feb. 14. Fisher said the nonprofit organization Pearland Pets is covering all adoption fees through this time period to cover the city's costs.

Pet adoptions cover vaccines, flea and heartworm medication, micro-chipping services, registration and city licensing. Potential adopters must be approved through the city's adoption process, which includes landlord approval and past veterinarian care that will be verified by Pearland Animal Shelter personnel.

"We want to make sure dogs and cats go to forever homes," Fisher said. "It's heartbreaking when one gets adopted and gets returned. We have been approved to get a new shelter (so) in the future we will have more space, but any help that people can give by fostering or adopting could save an animal's life."
