Matunuck Woman Among Honorees at Adoption Rhode Island's National Adoption Month Celebration

PROVIDENCE, RI

Lise M. Iwon of Matunuck, was among the 15 community members recognized at the Adoption Rhode Island National Adoption Month Celebration and Awards ceremony at the Rhode Island State House on Wed. Nov. 20, 2019.

Lise was chosen for Adoption RI's "Beacon of Hope Award", and award that recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a strong commitment to providing hope for children impacted by foster care and adoption. Lise has been a strong advocate for children throughout her legal career and beyond. Lise works tirelessly to rally support for these children, in both behind the scenes advocacy and in a high energy Duffle Bag Bash held every summer at the Matunuck Community Center. When Lise heard that children in foster care move between placements in garbage bags, she was outraged. In typical, "something must be done style", Lise, along with the Office of the Child Advocate and Adoption Rhode Island created the now annual Duffle Bag Bash. In it's fourth year, the event welcomes over 300 people who donated over 1000 duffle bags and backpacks to children in foster care. Lise credits the success of the event with the Matunuck Community. Everyone from the Matunuck Community Center, where the event is held, to the South County Volunteers who help with parking, to the individual businesses, including Matunuck Oyster Bar, Mews Tavern, and Pier Ice among many others who donate goods and services to make sure the event is a success, to members of the community who take time out of their day to support this cause.

Adoption Rhode Island is honored to recognize Lise in the work she has done, and continues to do for vulnerable children in our state.

Adoption Rhode Island's annual State House Ceremony is held each November to celebrate adoption, raise awareness about the children who wait, and recognize Rhode Islanders and adoption professionals for their support of the hundreds of children in state care hoping to someday have a family to call their own. The event also marks the unveiling of a new Rhode Island Heart Gallery, this year in its 15th year. The inspiring event took place on Wednesday, November 20 at the Rhode Island State House.
