Fennel could ease hot flushes during menopause, research … – Evening Standard

Fennel could help beat hot flushes brought on by the menopause, experts have revealed.

The aniseed- flavoured herb, consumed in tablet form, can also help reduce night sweats and sleeplessness, Iranian scientists have said.

The natural remedy contains phytoestrogens that act like female sex hormone oestrogen which women lose after their child-bearing years.

Ninety post-menopausal women were given 100mg of the tablets or a fake placebo pill by researchers at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Those taking the real supplement reported a huge change in anxiety, hot flushes and sleep problems linked to the menopause.

The results could make it a popular alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy.

A report, published in a journal entitled Menopause, reads: Fennel is an effective and safe treatment to reduce menopausal symptoms in post-menopausal women without serious side effects.”

The herb has also been found to help reduce PMT in younger women.
