Porphyria is a term that refers to a group of disorders—the porphyrias—that affect the nervous system or skin, or both. Each type of porphyria is due to the deficiency of one of the enzymes needed to make a substance in the body called heme. Enzymes are proteins that help chemical reactions happen in the body. Making heme involves a series of eight different enzymes, each acting in turn.

Heme is a red pigment composed of iron linked to a chemical called protoporphyrin. Heme has important functions in the body. The largest amounts of heme are in the blood and bone marrow in the form of hemoglobin within red blood cells. Hemoglobin gives blood its red color and carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. In the liver, heme is a component of proteins that have many functions, including breaking down hormones, drugs, and other chemicals and generating high-energy compounds that keep liver cells alive and functioning normally.

The body makes heme mainly in the bone marrow and the liver. The process of making heme is called the heme biosynthetic pathway. Each step of the process is controlled by one of eight enzymes. If any one of the enzymes is deficient, the process is disrupted. As a result, porphyrin or its precursors—chemicals formed at earlier steps of the process—may build up in body tissues and cause illness.

What are the types of porphyria?

The table below lists each type of porphyria and the deficient enzyme responsible for the disorder. Porphyrias are often classified as acute or cutaneous. Acute types of porphyria affect the nervous system, whereas cutaneous types mainly affect the skin. Two forms of porphyria—hereditary coproporphyria and variegate porphyria—may be either acute or cutaneous, or both.

Acute types of porphyria affect the nervous system, whereas cutaneous types mainly affect the skin. Two forms of porphyria—hereditary coproporphyria and variegate porphyria—may be either acute or cutaneous, or both.

The most common type of porphyria overall is porphyria cutanea tarda. In the United States, acute intermittent porphyria is the most common acute porphyria.

What causes porphyria?

Most porphyrias are inherited disorders, meaning they are caused by abnormalities in genes passed from parents to children. Scientists have identified the genes for all eight enzymes in the heme pathway. Some forms of porphyria result from inheriting an abnormal gene from one parent. Other forms are due to inheriting two abnormal genes—one from each parent. The risk that members of an affected family will have the disease or transmit it to their children depends on the type of porphyria.

One type of porphyria—porphyria cutanea tarda—is most often an acquired disorder. It occurs when factors other than genes cause an enzyme deficiency in the liver.

Porphyria can be triggered by

drugs such as barbiturates, tranquilizers, birth control pills, and sedatives

chemicals

fasting

smoking

drinking alcohol, especially heavy drinking

infections

excess iron in the body

emotional and physical stress

menstrual hormones

exposure to the sun

What are the symptoms of porphyria?

People with cutaneous forms of porphyria develop blisters, itching, and swelling of their skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Symptoms of acute forms of porphyria include pain in the abdomen, chest, limbs, or back; numbness, tingling, paralysis, or cramping; vomiting; constipation; and personality changes or mental disorders. Acute attacks of porphyria can develop over hours or days and last for days or weeks.

Symptoms can vary widely in severity. Some people with gene mutations that can cause porphyria have no signs or symptoms of the disorder. These people are said to have latent porphyria.

How is porphyria diagnosed?

Doctors diagnose porphyria using blood, urine, and stool tests. Interpreting test results can be complex, and initial tests may be followed by further testing to confirm the diagnosis. Diagnosis may be delayed because the symptoms of porphyria are similar to symptoms of other disorders.

How is porphyria treated?

Each type of porphyria is treated differently. Treatment may involve avoiding triggers, receiving heme through a vein, taking medicines to relieve symptoms, or having blood drawn to reduce iron in the body. People who have severe attacks may need to be hospitalized.

For starters, they pack a powerful nutritional punch for a relatively low calorie count. They’re also packed with substances that help fight inflammation and cancer. As if that weren’t enough, in lab studies, quercetin and ellagic acid, two compounds contained in cherries, have been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors and even cause cancer cells to commit suicide — without damaging healthy cells. Cherries also have antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Anthocyanin, another compound in cherries, is credited with lowering the uric acid levels in the blood, thereby reducing a common cause of gout. Researchers believe anthocyanins may also reduce your risk of colon cancer. Further, these compounds work like a natural form of ibuprofen, reducing inflammation and curbing pain. Regular consumption may help lower risk of heart attack and stroke.

In Chinese medicine, cherries are routinely used as a remedy for gout, arthritis, and rheumatism (as well as anemia, due to their high iron content). Plus they’re delicious.

How much: Aim for a daily serving while they’re in season locally. And keep a bag of frozen cherries in your freezer the rest of the year; frozen cherries retain 100 percent of their nutritional value and make a great addition to smoothies, yogurt, and oatmeal.

     Tip:

Buy organic or wash thoroughly, since conventionally grown cherries can be high in pesticides.

As part of a healthy diet, whole foods play a significant role in helping our bodies function at their best. There are hundreds of extremely nutritious whole foods, but the dozen on this list do more than contribute healthy nutrients — they help you heal. In fact, every food on this list boasts multiple healing effects, from fighting cancer to reducing cholesterol, guarding against heart disease, and more. Eat these super-healing picks and start feeling pretty super yourself.

1. Kiwifruit

This tiny, nutrient-dense fruit packs an amazing amount of vitamin C (double the amount found in oranges), has more fiber than apples, and beats bananas as a high-potassium food. The unique blend of phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals found in kiwifruit helps protect against heart disease, stroke, cancer, and respiratory disease. Kiwifruit’s natural blood-thinning properties work without the side effects of aspirin and support vascular health by reducing the formation of spontaneous blood clots, lowering LDL cholesterol, and reducing blood pressure. Multiple studies have shown that kiwifruit not only reduces oxidative stress and damage to DNA but also prompts damaged cells to repair themselves.

Kiwifruit is often prescribed as part of a dietary regimen to battle cancer and heart disease, and in Chinese medicine it’s used to accelerate the healing of wounds and sores.

How much: Aim to eat one to two kiwifruit a day while they’re in season, for the best taste and nutrition. California-grown kiwifruit are in season from October through May, and New Zealand kiwifruit are available between April and November.

     Tips:

Kiwifruit contains enzymes that activate once you cut the fruit, causing the flesh to tenderize. So if you’re making a fruit salad, cut the kiwifruit last.

The riper the kiwifruit, the greater the antioxidant power, so let them ripen before you dig in.

Getting your doctor to prescribe you antibiotics is a tall order these days, but our GPs aren’t trying to make us suffer. Modern reliance and over-use of the drugs for decades have led to new strains of bacteria that are resistant to many commonly used antibiotics. This means GPs are extra careful not to give out antibiotics if they believe you have a viral infection, and you may feel short changed walking away from your visit empty handed.

If you’re prescribed antibiotics, it’s because you really need them to get better and fight infection, but for minor ailments, coughs and colds, and to boost your immune system, there are many foods, herbs and extracts that boast bacteria, fungus and viral-fighting properties.

Five natural antibiotics to try

1. Onions

The sulphur in onions that gives them their strong smell and distinct taste is thought to have diuretic and anti-bacterial properties. As well as traditionally being used in a similar way to garlic for fighting minor colds, syrups made from onions are thought to work as an expectorant for nasty coughs. They also improve blood flow and are anti-inflammatory. So make sure you’ve got a big helping in your spag bol tonight.

2. Garlic

One of the oldest medicinal plants, garlic has been used in many cultures for its antibiotic properties and ability to ward off colds and flu. The chemical allicin that gives garlic its strong taste and smell is thought to also give it its therapeutic power. Studies have suggested it can lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels. Plus, a recent study found that it was more effective at treating food poisoning than standard drugs.

3. Green tea

Though not quite an antibiotic food, green tea has been shown in scientific studies to help antibiotics work well, so you’re less likely to need to take another course of them. As well as being chockablock with antioxidants and generally great for you, it’s a fairly low caffeine choice and could also make even resistant bacteria susceptible to antibiotics.

4. Honey

Good externally for cuts and infections, honey, and especially Manuka honey, from bees that feed exclusively on the manuka bush in New Zealand and Australia, is well known for its antibiotic properties. Containing antimicrobial enzymes that release hydrogen peroxide, honey can help prohibit the growth of bacteria and has been used to treat external and internal bacterial infections, including stomach ulcers. A dab of Manuka honey on wounds keeps infection way.

5. Echinacea

A plant extract, Echinacea is known for battling a wide range of bugs, both bacterial and viral. It also stimulates your immune system so that your white blood cells fight off infections more effectively. Studies have shown that taking a daily Echinacea supplement can reduce your chance of catching a cold by around 58 per cent and will reduce the amount of time you are sick. Its effectiveness can wear off though, so it’s recommended you only take it in bursts of a few weeks, particularly during the sickly winter months and if you feel you’re coming down with something.

MADISON, N.J., May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ –Quest Diagnostics (DGX), the world’s leading provider of diagnostic testing, information and services, has extended its endocrine diagnostics menu with the introduction of four new tests panels for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), an endocrine disorder found in newborns, children and women. The panels are designed to overcome limitations in conventional testing to provide faster, high quality diagnosis of CAH in a single analysis.

“CAH is challenging to diagnose, and often escapes fast detection and treatment,” said endocrinologist Richard E. Reitz, M.D., medical director, Quest Diagnostics, and chair, Endocrine Division, Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute. “We designed our new CAH panels to aid in assessing the different patient populations affected by CAH using the most advanced analytical-test method available. We believe these panels will improve the quality and timeliness of diagnosis of CAH for many patients.”

CAH is an endocrine disorder, typically inherited, that causes an overproduction of androgens, a family of so-called male hormones that include testosterone. The condition can accelerate the development of male features in newborns and children of both genders. In newborns, CAH can be fatal if untreated, and CAH screening of newborns shortly after birth is widely performed in the United States.

The new offerings feature a comprehensive panel for newborn screening for CAH. The panel enables analysis of all 13 steroids associated with CAH using the highly sensitive and specific liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) measurement technique.

In addition, the test can be performed on a sample volume of 0.1 milliliter, making it well suited to newborn heel-prick sample collection.

By comparison, conventional clinical CAH test offerings generally require clinicians to measure CAH-associated steroids using different tests and require a much larger sample volume. In addition, some clinical tests are based on immunoassays, which may be less reliable at measuring levels of certain steroids in children and women than LC/MS/MS. The Endocrine Society recommends testing by LC/MS/MS to evaluate CAH and other hyper-androgenic disorders.

The company also has introduced three additional CAH panels by LC/MS/MS. One panel aids in diagnosing acute stress conditions in newborns that can be misdiagnosed for CAH. Another panel aids in diagnosing and managing children and adults with the most common forms of CAH, which are caused by 21-hydroxylase or 11-hydroxylase enzyme deficiency. A fourth panel aids in differentiating non-classic CAH from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a highly common androgen disorder in women that shares similar symptoms with CAH.

The new panels were developed at Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute, the advanced research, development and testing center of Quest Diagnostics. Its endocrinology diagnostics services focus on diabetes, thyroid disease, adrenal dysfunction, reproduction, metabolism and pediatric endocrinology.

Orange-loving Trinidad guppies are curiously attracted to orange spots on prawn pincers, which may make it easier for the predators to snatch them up.

Orange spots on prawn pincers may take advantage of the fact that guppies happen to like the color, according to new research published today (May 15) in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. In some Trinidad streams, predatory prawns coexist with guppy species with brilliant orange males and that eat orange-colored fruit. By copying the color, the prawns appear to be able to get closer to their prey, as guppies dropped their guard when they saw the orange-spotted pincers. Thus, what might lure a female guppy to a male might also lure her into danger.

This is the first significant advance on predatory lures for 100+ years and the first experiment really addressing why a lure should actually work, John Endler, an evolutionary ecologist at Deakin University in Australia, wrote in a email. Endler, who was not involved with the research, co-authored a study in 1990 that linked female preference for orange guppies with the prevalence of orange-colored males.

That predators might have co-opted a prey species color preference in order to entice that prey is a new, interesting twist on color bias, which states that animals evolve preferences and even high visual acuity for colors relevant to their survival and reproduction, added Greg Grether, a behavioral ecologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who was not involved in the work. Grethers work, for example, has shown that female guppies love of orange pushed male guppies to maintain the right orange shade.

During a trip to Trinidad to study other details of guppy color vision, Cameron Weadick of Helen Rodds University of Toronto lab and his collaborators noticed that prawns, which are believed to be insensitive to orange, often had orange spots on their pincers. Even more curious, the prawns often adopted a stationary, pincer-open stance that hinted they might be lying in wait, said Weadick. It spurred the notion that the spots might be lures for the orange-sensitive guppies.

Juvenile prawn with orange-spotted pincers. Cameron Weadick

To test this hypothesis, the researchers made model prawns, painted brown, with either uniform claws or claws with orange or green spots. They then placed female guppies in aquaria with the model prawns and charted how long the guppies stayed in the safe zone, near the prawns tail, or ventured into the danger zone, near its head.

They found that guppies from prawn-filled streams stayed near the tail in solid brown and green-spotted models, but spent more time near the headand thus the pincersin models with orange spots, suggesting their preference for the color was luging them to the spots.

A second set of experiments with live crayfish showed little effect of orange spots, however, possibly because additional cues of a live predator, such as movement and smell, overrode the guppies penchant for orange. Or it could simply be that the crayfish were not as convincing predators as their prawn models, said Weadick, or because the researchers had painted them with orange nail polish, unwilling to paint live animals with the same heavy acrylic paint theyd used on the models, and more research is needed to differentiate between these possibilities

Future work will also help determine which guppies are the most easily lured, said Endler, who suspects there may be differences in male and female guppy responses to orange pincers. If males respond equally to females, it would suggest that the prawns are taking advantage of a food bias, rather than a sexual bias, he said.

Harmful chemicals in the environment could reduce male sperm count, according to a new study.

An international team of researchers, which was analysing the sperm count of animals, found that chemicals in cosmetics, detergents and pollutants could lead to low sperm count.

The researchers conducted a study on a few sheep that grazed on a tract of land. When they studied the sperm count of the sheep, they found that the sheep had a 42 percent lower sperm count. When they analysed the causes of this, they discovered that the land on which the sheep grazed contained harmful chemicals.

“We were very surprised to find abnormalities that could result in low sperm counts in the testicles in 42 per cent of the animals,” BBC quoted Dr Michelle Bellingham, researcher at Glasgow University, as saying.

    Like us on Facebook

This clearly shows how dangerous and harmful these chemicals are for animals and humans or male fertility.

According to the researchers, several animals and humans across the world are exposed to harmful chemicals on a daily basis. They claim that these chemicals can have a major effect on our health.

“Some of these chemicals can interfere with the communication systems within the body and potentially have adverse effects on health,” the Scotsman quoted Professor Neil Evans, researcher at the University of Glasgow, as saying.

“These findings emphasise that even when the concentration of single chemicals in the environment may be very low, it is hard to predict what the health effects are when an individual is exposed to a mixture of chemicals,” the BBC quoted Neil Evans, as saying.

Researchers believe this is the reason for an increase in IVF (Invitro fertilisation) treatment.

Busy lives and juggling work and family often
mean our own health is the last thing women think about. But if you’ve
been ignoring any of these warning signs, now’s the time to get them
checked out

In
many cases they really are just down to a hectic lifestyle, but occasionally they can be signs of something more serious, and taking a
morning out to visit your doctor is a lot easier than needing more
complicated treatment further down the line.

Extreme tiredness

Feeling
worn out is a common side effect of modern lifestyles but chronic
fatigue (LINK) could be a sign of many health issues, some of which can
be easily resolved.

If your energy levels have been low for more
than two weeks you could have a deficiency in your diet, such as iron
(causing anaemia), or an imbalance of hormones. Thyroid problems can
make you feel tired and can be treated with medication. In some cases
constant tiredness can be a symptom of something more serious, such as
lung cancer, heart disease, or depression, so don’t keep putting up with
it.

Your shape – apple or pear

While it
isn’t exactly a symptom, your shape can give you an early indication of
potential health problems so it’s a good idea to be aware where you put
weight on (even if you don’t want to admit it to anyone else!). If you
are apple shaped and put weight on around your tummy then you’re
statistically more likely to run into health problems such as diabetes
and heart disease.

If your waist is over 32” (80cm) it’s worth
keeping an eye out for symptoms of diabetes. Over 35” (88cm) and you’re
even more at risk of both diabetes and heart disease.

Being
pear-shaped may not seem like a blessing but generally putting weight on
your bottom and thighs doesn’t signal as many health worries.

Bleeding between periods

As
well as being annoying and alarming, bleeding when it’s not your period
can signal a number of health concerns. It’s a symptom of some
gynaecological cancers but is also linked to other conditions, many far
less serious. These include hormone imbalances, reactions to the pill or
other contraceptives, endometriosis, STDs and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS). Any bleeding between periods or after the menopause needs to be
checked out by your doctor. Pain in the area is also a sign something’s
not right, so report any pain or bleeding during or after sex [LINK] to
your doctor as well as if you feel constantly bloated or have pelvic
pain.

[Related article: Ovarian cancer - know the symptoms]

Breast changes

Breast cancer awareness has
never been higher but still many women are unaware of changes in their
breasts. Get to know how yours fluctuate over the month and keep an eye
out for the warning signs – lumps or thickening of the skin around the
breast or armpit, discharge from the nipple, puckering or reddening of
the skin and changes in shape of both the breast and the nipple. Breast
cancer doesn’t always cause pain but any soreness should also be checked
out. There are many other causes of these symptoms though so don’t be
afraid of going to the doctors to put your mind at ease.

Chest pain

Heart
attacks, heart disease and strokes are the biggest killer of women in
the UK. And while classic symptoms of a heart attack will have you
straight on the phone to 999, there are many other signs of heart
problems you may ignore and dismiss as something else. These include a
heavy feeling on the chest, tightness or crushing and also milder chest
pain, which can feel a little like a bad case of indigestion. Two fifths
of women, particularly at the younger end of the spectrum, have
reported experiencing no chest pain before having a heart attack, which
is why it’s vital to get any discomfort checked out in case.

Use steroid medicines, which can lower the body’s
resistance to infection.

What
causes necrotizing fasciitis?

Necrotizing fasciitis is caused by
several kinds of bacteria. Some of these bacteria also cause infections such as
strep
throat and impetigo. Usually the infections caused by these
bacteria are mild. But in rare cases they can cause a more dangerous infection.

You can get necrotizing fasciitis
when bacteria enter a wound, such as from an insect bite, a burn, or a cut. You can also get
it in:

Wounds that come in contact with ocean water, raw
saltwater fish, or raw oysters. You also can get it through injuries from
handling sea animals such as crabs.

An intestinal surgery site, or in tumors or gunshot
injuries in the intestines.

A muscle strain or bruise, even if there is no break in the
skin.

Bacteria that cause necrotizing
fasciitis can be passed from person to person through close contact, such as
kissing, or by touching the wound of the infected person. But a person who gets
infected by the bacteria is unlikely to get necrotizing fasciitis unless he or
she has an open wound, chickenpox, or an impaired immune system.

What
are the symptoms?

The symptoms often start suddenly
after an injury. You may need medical care right away if you have pain that
gets better over 24 to 36 hours and then suddenly gets worse. The pain may be
much worse than you would expect from the size of the wound or injury. You may
also have:

Skin that is red, swollen, and hot to the touch.

A fever and chills.

Nausea and vomiting.

Diarrhea.

The infection may spread rapidly. It
quickly can become life-threatening. You may go into shock and have damage to skin, fat, and the
tissue covering the muscles. (This damage is called gangrene.)
Necrotizing fasciitis can lead to organ failure and death.

How
is necrotizing fasciitis diagnosed?

The doctor will diagnose your
infection based on how suddenly your symptoms started and how quickly the
infection is spreading. The infected tissue may be tested for bacteria. You
also may need X-rays, a CT
scan, or an MRI to look for injury to your organs or to find
out how much the infection has spread

How is it treated?

Early treatment of necrotizing
fasciitis is critical. The sooner treatment begins, the more likely you will
recover from the infection and avoid serious complications, such as limb
amputation or death. You may be treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the
hospital.

Treatment may include:

Surgery that removes infected tissue and fluids to stop
the spread of infection. Surgery is almost always needed. Most people need
several surgeries to control the infection. Removing limbs (amputation) or
organs may be done to save the person’s life, depending on how severe the
infection is and where it has spread.

Medicines (such as antibiotics).
These kill the bacteria causing the infection.

Procedures to treat complications such as shock, breathing problems, and organ failure.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This can help
prevent tissue death and promote healing.

What
if you have been near someone who has the disease?

Necrotizing fasciitis is very rare.
Bacteria that cause the disease usually don’t cause infection unless they enter
the body through a cut or other break in the skin.

If you have been in close contact
with someone who has necrotizing fasciitis, your doctor may give you an
antibiotic to help reduce your chances of getting the infection. If you develop
any symptoms of infection (such as pain, swelling, redness, or fever) after
you’ve been in close contact with someone who has it, see your doctor right
away.

To help prevent any kind of
infection, wash your hands often, and always keep cuts, scrapes, burns, sores,
and bites clean.

ask the question when they fall pregnant, “Do I continue to train?”. If
there are no known complications, after speaking with your doctor you’re
free to keep training, but some modifications need to be made.

As it is non-weight
bearing and keeps the body’s core temperature down, swimming is the
preferred exercise modality for women and can be completed late into the
pregnancy.

Getty Images

TRIATHLON

Focus
on technique and drills in swimming. This will maintain a reasonable
level of fitness and, once you can push the training along a little more
intensely, give you considerable performance benefits.

Ride
indoors on the turbo trainer and have had a number of pregnant squad
members participate in sessions with minimum safety concerns.

CYCLING

Out
on the road can become a bit tricky particularly in the later months as
the woman’s centre of gravity shifts, lowering her stability and
drastically increasing the potential for falls. The last thing mother
and child need at 32 weeks into a pregnancy is to come off the bike! So
doing some sessions indoors on the turbo-trainer is highly recommended.
Cycling is only partially weight-bearing but as the pregnancy advances,
even on a stationary bike it can start to get very uncomfortable.

RUNNING
There
is no right and wrong way to approach this and all women consult their
doctors to ensure that they have no confounding underlying concerns
before running. Some women “race” right up till the day before giving
birth. Others opt for a more conservative approach and replace their
runs with brisk walks of a similar duration. Following a walk the baby
can be more relaxed and content from the rhythmical movement.

Some key points to remember and avoid:

Don’t allow your core temperature to rise excessively.

Avoid becoming lactic in training.

Avoid becoming dehydrated.

Realise that your balance and mobility won’t be the same throughout the pregnancy and make adjustments accordingly.

As
the pregnancy advances and your body starts to circulate greater
concentrations of the hormone relaxin there is an increased possibility
of joint problems such as dislocations.

Don’t restrict calories
and try to keep you weight down during pregnancy. A healthy weight gain
for a woman at full term pregnancy is between 10-14 kilograms for an
average size woman (60kg), less if you’re overweight, more if you’re
underweight.

Use your pregnancy as a period to “exercise” rather than “train”.

In
the final analysis you and your baby are the most important concerns.
If your training has to suffer for a few months for the long term health
of your bub then so be it, the rewards out-weigh the sacrifices a
thousand fold

LiveScience.com reports huge manta rays in the Yucatan Peninsula were studied using satellite tracking data. Six specimens of Manta birostris were tagged and then tracked for 13 days. What scientists found is that the large creatures travel a lot. Four females, one male and one juvenile manta ray spent most of the time eating plankton around coastal areas of Mexico during the study.

diets, and juicers for sale. I’m sure if you have tried to lose weight
you’ve tried or at least considered trying a juicing diet. All of these
“green juices” really have the attention of many people because the
possible benefits sound really great. These diets are known as “fasts”
and this has become such a popular form of weight loss and detoxing.
Although it may sound like genius idea, there is some bad behind it. If
you aren’t familiar with

a juicing diet, read along to find out all the
facts about them!

WHAT IS A JUICE DIET, FAST DETOX?

This detox type of diet involves consuming only juice. This doesn’t
mean apple juice that you buy in the grocery store, this kind of juice
has to be fresh squeezed from the actual fruits and vegetables. Juices
in the grocery store are loaded with preservatives and sugars that
aren’t welcome in a juicing diet. During this diet, you won’t be
consuming any solid foods, even solid fruits and vegetables. Juice diets
are generally short term and should not be done any longer than a
couple of days. The idea behind the juice diet is to fill the body with
nutrients and vitamins and rid the body of any toxins that you have
built up.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE BENEFITS OF JUICING?

Following a juicing diet has been known to give your body trillions
of amazing benefits that you can’t get from anywhere else. This is the
majority of the reason that people do them! Some of the possible
benefits include: high intake of vitamins and nutrients, weight loss,
alkalizes your whole body, detoxifies your liver, prevents or treats
acne, fights aging, improves texture of hair and nails, increases your
energy levels, and improves your immune system. After reading those
benefits, why wouldn’t you try a juicing diet?

WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT JUICING?

You have probably heard just about as many bad things about juicing
as you have good. Why is this? Well, juicing can get a bad rep
sometimes, and for good reason. Aside from the many possible benefits
juicing can give you, your body can also suffer from them.

Too much sugar. Juice is naturally high in sugar, and although these
are natural sugars, too much sugar in any form is not good. Consuming
glasses and glasses of fruit juice a day provides more sugar than you
need.

Loss of nutrients. This may sound hard to believe because all you
will be drinking is liquid nutrients but that’s not so true. Fruits and
vegetables are solid foods and they contain skin and fiber that is a big
part of the nutritious parts of the foods. While you juice, you aren’t
eating that skin so you are skimping out on a heck of a lot of the
nutrients. Apples are a perfect example. The skin of an apple contains a
ton of fiber. Fiber is important for many aspects of your health. When
you juice the apple, you are throwing out a big portion of the nutrition
of an apple.

Expensive. Buying a juicer is not like buying a blender. Many
juicers on the market are very highly priced. You can, of course, buy
the inexpensive juicers that you must do yourself but buying an electric
juicer can get pricey. Aside from purchasing the juicer, you have to
buy enough fruits and vegetables in order to last throughout the detox.
To get one cup of apple juice, you will need about 3-4 apples. Eating
the actual apple would be much cheaper and more nourishing. Another
thing about the fruits and vegetables is that you should always buy
organic. Organic does tend to be a bit pricier. Therefore if you are
looking for an inexpensive diet, juicing wouldn’t be the way to go.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF JUICING

There are a few side effects to participating in a juicing fast. Many
of these side effects are on the unpleasant side so it’s important to
be aware of them before beginning. Some of the most common side effects
include headache, tiredness, constipation, and dizziness. These are the
most common ones which aren’t really harmful but are unpleasant. I know
that I said before in the benefits part of this article that juicing
will increase your energy level and help with acne but you have to go
through the bad parts to experience the good parts. For example, during a
juicing diet, you may find your face breaking out. This is because your
body is detoxing and all of the bad stuff has to come out somewhere so
you may find yourself with some pimples. These aren’t temporary! And in
the long run, your body will get rid of the dirt and bacteria that cause
pimples and will leave you with clear skin. But in case you wanted to
detox before a big event like a wedding, you should be cautious. Some of
the more serious side effects that juicing can cause include fainting,
low blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhea, and even possible heart or
kidney problems. If you find yourself experiencing any of these, it’s
vital that you stop juicing and visit your doctor.

So should you juice or not? Well, that’s not really up to me! But now
that you know the pros and cons of juicing, you can make a decision.
It’s important that you do it the right away though. Juicing for too
long of a time period can create serious problems such as nutrient
deficiencies. It would be such a waste to juice for all that time to
find yourself in worse shape than you started. Health should always come
first. If you are really interested in juicing, I would recommend doing
it only 3-4 times a month. That’s about once a week. If you are
pregnant or nursing, it is highly, highly recommended that you do not
juice. Also if you are taking prescription drugs for any reason, avoid
juicing. Juicing reduces blood proteins which can change the way the
prescription drugs react in your body. If you are still unsure if you
should give it a shot, talk to your healthcare professional.

If you’ve been struck down by a cold, giving yourself a break may be the best
thing you can do. To fight the good fight for your body, balance that cold with
warmth – literally. Your body will benefit from hot drinks, hot showers, and
gargling with warm salty water.

Protect what Matters

Annual vaccinations are a more effective way to treat the flu than antibiotics,
which aren’t even designed to treat the flu. Each Autumn, get proactive and get
a vaccination – this can save you from some of the known side effects of
antibiotics like digestional problems and thrush – and prevention is better
than cure!

It’s all in your hands

One of the best (and cheapest!) ways to keep cold and flu at bay is one that
should be incorporated into your everyday life. Take action on your health by
creating physical barriers for the little micro-critters which spread
infection. Keep your hands clean by washing with soap before eating or cooking,
and after coughing or blowing your nose. Invest in a handbag-sized bottle of
anti-bac hand sanitiser for those times when you’re nowhere near a sink!

Life Liquid

Help your body detox when you’re under the cloud of a cold or flu. The answer?
It’s as simple as the kitchen sink! Drinking plenty of water will speed up the
detoxification process, meaning you really will get better soon.

Smoke and Mirrors

Is your life literally getting you down? Smokers with a cold or flu will be
bedridden for longer. That’s because smoking slows down the body’s detox
processes. If you’re a smoker, make this your opportunity to cut back, or even
better, quit altogether – it’s never too late!

The Flu Family

Over the counter cold and flu medicines vary in effectiveness. Painkillers like
paracetamol and ibuprofen are good for relief from a sore throat, but aspirin
should not be given to children, as it may cause complications. ‘Cold and Flu’
medicines should also be used with caution in children, and should be avoided
altogether for children under two.

Free and Easy

While decongestants will unblock a stuffy nose, they can cause problems. You
should take special care if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, or if
you’re taking other medicines. They might cause side effects like hallucination
and excitability in children younger than 12 years. Saline (salt water) drops
or sprays are a safer, natural and equally effective option.

For students at Western who dont plan on raising children during college, a male contraceptive could one day provide new options to put baby-making on hold.

A birth control procedure for men could be available worldwide by 2015, according to the Male Contraceptive Information Project website.

The project is a nonprofit organization that raises public awareness of non-hormonal male contraceptives. The procedure is in advanced trials in India, and has been used by Indian men in a clinical trial for more than 15 years. None of the 12 male volunteers reported pregnancies. These trial results were published in a 1997 issue of the scholarly journal, Contraception.

According to the projects website,, the surgeon makes a small puncture in the scrotum and uses thin forceps to extract the vas deferens tube. For a vasectomy, the tube is severed, which usually stops sperm transportation for good.

The new contraceptive works by injecting a gel into the vas deferens, which then hardens after 72 hours. The gel attaches to the tubes tissue, while still allowing fluids and sperm to pass through, according to the projects website.

Two common chemicals make up the gel compound styrene maleic anhydride, an ingredient in floor polish, and dimethyl sulfoxide, a common solvent. The compound forms a pattern of negative and positive polarization that breaks apart sperm membranes, causing the sperm to essentially explode, making them unable to fertilize an egg, according to the projects website.

The procedure, called Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance, allows the man to regain fertility whenever he chooses, as opposed to a vasectomy, which can be permanent, according to the projects website.

The gel lasts for more than 10 years, and an injection of water and baking soda will flush it out, according to the projects website.

Emily Gibson, medical director of the Student Health Center, said any alternative contraception is welcome, as there are couples that struggle with the contraceptives currently available.

Current birth control practices can put a monetary burden on people, some having to pay up to for $1,000 dollars per year for intrauterine devices, or IUDs, said Kimberly Absher, coordinator of the Associated Students Womens Center.

I’m a big proponent of protein. Eggs for breakfast, grilled chicken
for lunch, lightly seared filet of salmon for dinner—I can’t get enough.
But even I have a limit, and that limit generally begins about the time
I see exoskeletons, tentacles, pinchers, or stingers sticking out of my
food.

I realize that in some parts of the world, bugs are
considered a reliable source of protein. But the people who eat those
bugs do so willingly. It’s a normal part of their diet. Here in the
United States, we’re pretty squeamish about chomping into insects or
stabbing our forks into larvae. And that’s why it might come as a shock
to discover that, because of the FDA’s lax food-safety regulations, your
food might very well be crawling with creepy, slimy, buzzing things of
all sorts. In fact, it’s been estimated that the average person
unintentionally eats a pound of insects every year. And I’m not talking
about gummy worms here. I’m talking about real live (or formerly live)
bugs.

With the help of Rodale.com writer Emily Main, we’ve
identified a few of the more disgusting bugs infiltrating your food.
Prepare to be grossed out.

Thrips

At
anywhere from 1/25 to 1/8 of an inch long, these tiny little winged
parasites are legally allowed in apple butter, canned or frozen
asparagus, frozen broccoli, and frozen Brussels sprouts.

Aphids

Those
same little green or black bugs that can destroy a bouquet of flowers
can infiltrate your frozen veggies, particularly spinach, broccoli, and
Brussels sprouts. And if you home-brew beer, you might consider growing
your own hops: The FDA legally allows 2,500 aphids for every 10 grams of
hops.

LENIENT LEGISLATORS: Pest control isn’t the only area
where the FDA is lax—many food-packaging claims are entirely unregulated
by the government! Don’t believe it?

Mites

These
tiny white bugs are common in wheat and other grains that have been
stored for a while, but expect to eat a few with your frozen vegetables.
And if you have indoor allergies, that could be a problem. Storage and
grain mites can cause the same type of allergic reaction as the dust
mites common in homes.

Maggots

If
you’ve ever eaten canned food, you’ve probably also eaten a maggot.
These disgusting little critters abound in things like canned mushrooms,
canned tomatoes, tomato paste, and pizza sauces, as well as fresh or
frozen Maraschino cherries. Mushrooms are by far the worst: 20 maggots
are allowed for every 100 grams of drained mushrooms, compared with
between 1 and 5 for every 500 grams of tomato products.

SCARIEST FOOD ADDITIVES: Some gross ingredients, like bugs, are supposed to be removed from food.

Fruit Flies

Buy
a piece of fruit covered in fruit flies, and you can wash them off. Buy
a can of citrus juice, and you’ll be swilling five fruit flies with
every 8-ounce cup of juice. Grab an 8-ounce handful of raisins and you
could be eating as many as 35 fruit-fly eggs.

Not sure how to pick the best produce? No problem.

Corn Ear Worms

Corn
is notoriously difficult to grow organically, because it’s prone to
insect infestations. But in most cases, it’s easy to avoid eating the
earworms that burrow into corncobs and eat the silk—just cut the kernels
off the cob, and voilà! However, canned sweet corn will come with some
extra crunch from all the larvae, skins, and skin fragments allowed by
the FDA.

CHUCK BOMBS: If bugs don’t scare you, maybe this will: Applebee’s
Quesadilla Burger has more than 1,200 calories!

Cowpea curculio

Love
black-eyed peas? Buy them dried and cook them yourself, rather than
buying them frozen or canned. A can of black-eyed peas, cowpeas, or
field peas may contain an average of five or more cowpea curculio
larvae, which will grow into dark brown, beetle-like weevils that infest
all manner of peas and beans.

Caterpillarsa

Fuzzy,
ugly caterpillars are supposed to turn into beautiful butterflies for
people to marvel at—not eat in a mouthful of frozen spinach. But along
with the 50 or so aphids, mites, and thrips allowed in 100 grams of
spinach, you may also find yourself munching on caterpillar larvae and
larval fragments. Mmm . . . probably not what was giving Popeye all that
strength.

A Dose of Vitamin D for the Healthy Life

With summer practically here, many people are going to get the
vitamin D that they have been lacking in for the past couple months with
the cooler seasons. Vitamin D is such an important vitamin and it plays
many roles in the human body. Did you ever notice that you have much
more energy and feel much livelier in the summer months and a little bit
more tired and down in the winter months? Well, this has a lot to do
with your intake of vitamin D.

WHAT IS VITAMIN D AND WHY DO I NEED IT?

This vitamin is a fat soluble vitamin along with vitamins A, E, and
K. These fat soluble vitamins are the vitamins that are stored in the
body. As the name implies, these four vitamins are soluble in fats. Fat
soluble vitamins don’t really leave the body, instead they are stored.
Although vitamins are good for you and are necessary for life, too many
is a bad thing, especially of the fat soluble vitamins. Ingesting too
many can cause hypervitaminosis (too much of a vitamin) which can lead
to toxicity. Vitamin D is needed for many basic life functions such as
bone growth, bone remodeling, cell growth, and reducing inflammation.
Here are some of the most important things that vitamin D does for us:

It helps our bodies absorb calcium and phosphorus. Calcium and
phosphorus are very important for the bones and teeth. Calcium also
plays a very big role in muscle contraction, especially of the heart.
Other functions of calcium include: transmission of nerve impulses,
blood clotting, milk production in mothers, contractions of the uterus
for childbirth, and regulates many hormones. Phosphorus works along with
calcium to help maintain bone and teeth formation. Some functions of
phosphorus include: proper digestion, transmission of nerve impulses,
aids in kidney excretion, increases energy levels, and forms some
proteins. So you see that without calcium and phosphorus, your body
would be missing out on many important functions. And without vitamin D,
your body wouldn’t be able to absorb calcium and phosphorus.

It plays an important role in immune system function. Vitamin D
interacts with many parts of your immune system. It has been shown to
provide sort of like a shield to protect against bacteria and other
foreign substances. T cells are the cells in the immune system that
destroy any bad cells that your body may have and vitamin D plays a big
part in activating these T cells.

May help maintain your weight. There have been numerous studies
linked to vitamin D and maintaining a healthy weight. People who don’t
consume an adequate amount of vitamin D tend to have higher blood
pressure, higher body fat percentage, and a higher amount of belly fat.

Supports brain function. This is especially important for the older
adults. It can help prevent or delay any signs or symptoms of dementia
or Alzheimer’s disease.

Can help prevent certain cancers. There is always a debate over the
things you can do to prevent cancer but consuming an adequate amount of
vitamin D has been known to work. Vitamin D regulates the abnormal cells
that begin to multiply in the beginning stages of cancer which can slow
down or eliminate the entire process. The most common types of cancers
prevented by vitamin D are colon and rectal cancers.

These are just some of the biggest roles that vitamin D plays in the
human body. Some other important things vitamin D does is regulates
blood pressure, improves skin by reducing wrinkles, improves
cardiovascular function, reduces respiratory infections, relieves body
aches, and reduces stress.

THE BEST SOURCES OF VITAMIN D

Now that you know all of the great things about this vitamin, it’s time to get some in to your body! Here’s how!

Sunlight. Vitamin D has a nickname, “the sunshine vitamin.”
The sun is one of the best sources of vitamin D. This is the reason why
you are happier and more energetic in the summer months than you are in
the winter months. In the summer, there aren’t as many vitamin D
deficiency cases and for good reason. People are always out in the sun
during the summer months. During the winter months, people don’t get out
in the sun as much. Take advantage of the nice, sunny weather this
summer!

Cod liver oil.
This oil comes from the cod fish and is THE best animal source of
vitamin D. Only one teaspoon of the stuff can give you enough vitamin D
for the day.

Other fatty fish. Aside from cod fish, many other fatty fish are
good sources of vitamin D. Some examples include salmon, tuna, sardines,
and mackerel.

Eggs. Eggs are
great for a lot of reasons and their vitamin D property is one of them.
If you are someone who just eats the whites, you may want to add in
those yolks. The egg whites are great for a low cal, high protein choice
but the egg yolk is where the majority of the nutrients are, especially
vitamin D.

Milk. Milk is an excellent choice for consuming an adequate amount of vitamin D. Be sure to choose the low fat kind!

There are many sources of this vitamin, these are just a few that most popular because of the amount they provide.

It’s really important that you are getting
the right amount of vitamin D in your body. If you are unsure about
whether or not you’re on track, ask your doctor to mail you your blood
test results the next time you get blood work. Your vitamin D intake
will be on that list and will give you a good idea of where you’re at.
If you aren’t at an optimal level, don’t panic…just begin to consume
more of the foods listed above and maybe take a vacation to the
Caribbean! If your vitamin D levels are very low or if you don’t get
enough sun or eat the right foods, try a vitamin D supplement. Of course
it’s always better to get your vitamins from fresh, whole foods but if a
supplement is what is going to get you that vitamin D, by all means,
take it!

.

Danish researchers found that regular jogging increased the life expectancy of men by 6.2 years and women by 5.2 years.

They also found that between one to two-and-a-half hours of jogging
every week at a “slow or average pace” was most beneficial when it came
to adding years to your life.

The research was part of the Copenhagen City Heart study, which
started in 1976 and was designed to track heart and circulatory disease
in around 20,000 men and women aged 20 to 93.

For the jogging sub study, the researchers compared the lifespans of
1,116 male joggers and 762 female joggers with the non-joggers in the
main heart study population.

All study participants were asked questions about the amount of time
they spent jogging each week, and whether they ran at a slow, average or
fast pace.

The study found that the risk of death was reduced by 44 per cent for both male and female joggers compared with non-joggers.

Jogging at a moderate pace for between one hour and two-and-a half
hours a week, over two to three sessions, appeared to work best,
scientists said.

“The results of our research allow us to definitively answer the
question of whether jogging is good for your health,” said Dr Peter
Schnohr, chief cardiologist of the Copenhagen City Heart Study.

“We can say with certainty that regular jogging increases longevity.
The good news is that you don’t actually need to do that much to reap
the benefits.

“The relationship appears much like alcohol intakes. Mortality is
lower in people reporting moderate jogging, than in non-joggers or those
undertaking extreme levels of exercise.

“You should aim to feel a little breathless, but not very breathless,” he advised.

He also added that jogging delivered multiple health benefits
including improving oxygen uptake, cardiac function, bone density and
the immune system, as well as preventing obesity and lowering blood
pressure.

Natasha Stewart, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart
Foundation, said: “Physical activity has long been associated with
improved health and so it’s no surprise to see just how beneficial
jogging could be.

“Jogging might not be for everybody but there are plenty of other
ways to keep active. Swimming, walking or even a spot of gardening can
be beneficial, too. If you have concerns about the impact of exercise on
your health, visit your GP first.”

The findings will be presented at a European Society of Cardiology conference in Dublin.

Water is an essential element needed for humans to survive. Our
bodies are roughly made up of 60% to 80% water. Without water, we can
suffer from many ailments including dehydration. In severe cases,
dehydration can be fatal. For athletes, and others who participate in
physical activities like exercising, water consumption becomes even more
necessary to compensate for the fluid loss due to sweating. But how
much water does the average adult need to drink?

HOW MUCH WATER TO DRINK

Everyday humans lose water through sweating, urination, and other
bodily functions. It’s imperative to drink enough water to replace the
fluid loss and to maintain normal body processes. There are a few
popular philosophies on how much water to drink.

8 X 8 Rule – A long standing approach to drinking water is the 8 x 8 rule.
This rule suggests that people drink eight 8-ounce cups of water per
day. Over the years, this rule was slightly modified to include 8 cups
of fluids not just water.

Replacement Approach – This method has gained
traction over the recent years. The average amount of water loss for
humans per day is roughly 2.5 liters. It’s been reported that the foods
you eat can accounts for roughly 20% of your water intake. So, the
replacement approach recommends that adults take in at least 2 liters of
fluids per day.

Dietary Recommendation – The Institute of Medicine
recommends that men consume at least 3 liters of fluids, which is
roughly 13 cups, and that women consume 2.2 liters of fluids, which is
roughly 9 cups.

BENEFITS OF DRINKING WATER

1. Lose Weight
– consuming water can lead to weight loss if added to a healthy diet
and exercise. If you drink enough water before a meal, you won’t be as
hungry. Additionally, ice cold water forces the body to heat up to warm
the water, which leads to burning more calories. Protects Tissue and Joints – water helps to protect joints and the
connective tissues by providing lubrication to cartilage, which is a
shock absorber for the joints.

2. Digestion
– water plays a significant role in the digestion system. From your
mouth to your stomach, water aids in the transportation and the
digestion of foods. Water plays a big factor in helping the body to
digest fiber.

3. Waste System
– water helps organs like the kidneys and the liver flush out wastes
like urine. Water also helps to break down various toxins so they can be
flushed out. Water can also help to relieve symptoms resulting from
constipation.

4. Temperature
– water helps to regulate the body’s temperature. This is important if
you are exercising and your body starts heating up. Consuming water, or a
sports drink, will help to replace the fluids lost and keep the body
from overheating.

5. Body Aches
– in some cases, headaches and back aches can be a direct cause of not
drinking enough water. Consuming more water can help relieve these
pains.

6. Fatigue
– when you don’t drink enough water, the body has to work hard to
function normally due to the lack of fluids. Drinking more water can
help the body operate at an optimum level and make you feel more
energetic.

7. Alertness
– The brain is made up of at least 90% water. When a person doesn’t
drink enough water they are less focused and less attentive. Consuming
more water will help individuals concentrate better.

8. Healthier Skin
– on of the most notable signs of dehydration is within the skin. Lack
of water can make your skin look dry and tight. Adequate consumption of
water will make the skin look healthier, moisturized and more elastic.

9. Transportation
– in addition to transporting food, nutrients and wastes, water also
transports oxygen to the body’s vital organs. A lack of water will have a
negative impact on the body’s oxygen consumption which could lead to a
variety of serious health issues.

    7th May 2012 0 Comments

    By Zoe Sullivan Contributing Writer

Since the start of the year, issues related to womens reproduction have been front and center nationally. Some of these incidents include the uproar over the Susan G. Komen Foundations decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood, which provides cancer screenings and other routine health services to women around the country. Then there were Newt Gingrichs comments about Sandra Fluke, who argued to an all-male congressional committee on reproductive health that birth-control pills are also prescribed for therapeutic reasons, and, as such, should be covered by health insurance. And there have been a series of state laws focused on preventing women from terminating pregnancies.

Louisiana is no exception to this discussion, but the state has (or had) bills focusing both on empowering women as well as on restricting their rights to make healthcare decisions. Four bills introduced to the legislature this year covered issues ranging from guaranteeing equal pay for women to mandating that public schools offer comprehensive sex education as well as two bills related to interrupting a pregnancy.

Sen. John Alario, R-LA,, of the West Bank introduced Senate Bill 593, which would make it illegal to terminate a pregnancy after 20 weeks of gestation, unless the mothers life was threatened. Senator Alario did not respond to The Louisiana Weeklys request for an interview on this topic.

Nationally, less than 1.4 percent of abortions occur after 20 weeks, Julie Mickelberry of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast told The Louisiana Weekly. Explaining that one-size fits all legislation can have unintended consequences, Mickelberry said: one of the most tragic things that can happen to a pregnant woman is to discover that something has gone terribly wrong with her pregnancyThis bill completely undermines the abilities of physicians and families to make [relevant] medical decisions.

Mickelberry pointed to a case in Nebraska where a couple, Danielle and Rob, in their 22nd week of pregnancy suffered severe complications. Their story is available on Youtube. Danielles water broke, leaving the fetus with no amniotic fluid to protect it and allow it to continue developing. As a result, when the child was born 10 days later, it died within minutes because her lungs had not formed completely. These [laws] are affecting women who dont have any control over whats going to happen, Danielle said. They dont have any choice in how their pregnancy is going to end, and theyre compounding the awfulness of those situations by passing these laws that tie our hands, that tie the hands of the doctors

Another bill aimed at preventing abortions comes from State Senator Sharon Weston-Broome who represents a Baton Rouge district. Senate Bill 708 would mandate an ultrasound proceeding when a woman is preparing to abort a pregnancy. As part of the procedure, the physician would have to read a scripted text, something that Mickelberry says ignores the more personal and complex nature of an individuals health. Additionally, the woman would have to hear the fetal heart beat and would only be able to not see the image on the screen by turning her head.

Weston-Broome did not respond to The Louisiana Weeklys request for an interview.

This [bill] suggests that a woman in that position is taking that decision lightly, Dr. Lisa Richardson, Executive Director of the Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies, said of SB 708. Richardson also pointed out that the extra cost of the ultrasound procedure would be borne by the patient, which, she said could be devastating for many people.
